about

These are recordings of my first few days exploring the Moog Mother-32. Not having ever played this synth, I was inspired by the novelty and the somewhat unfamiliar territory. When I perform or record, I always choose to use at least one polyphonic synthesizer. With the Mother-32 being monophonic, this limitation seemed like a lot to overcome at first. As usual, I wanted to force myself to create lush textures and harmonies. The Mother-32 encouraged me to improvise each layer more closely to the way I might sing a melodic line. My improvised compositions rooted themselves around many melodic sequences, some of which I would eventually harmonize to arrive at a polyphonic texture.

I rarely use sequencers probably by chance since I have never owned one until now. Sometimes I use arpeggiators to get a similar vibe. Once I discovered the ability to program rhythmic patterns, I was very excited to see what would result. I found the sequencer to be vastly inspiring.

The compact design of the Mother-32 itself is something to marvel. I did play with some patching ideas outlined in the manual, but for my actual recording sessions, I had everything I needed with zero patching. Even though I could have connected a larger midi keyboard controller, in the interest of simplicity and eventually getting out and traveling light, I wanted to limit myself to the built-in keyboard.

Other gear I used include a dynamic mic, contact bottle cap mic, "the twankly," EHX 2880, EHX Cathedral, Line6 DL4, Eric Archer’s Grendel Drone Commander.
